Care For Your Hair Under The Weave

While a weave affords you a lot of versatility and protects your hair at the same time, you can’t neglect your own hair while wearing one. Contrary to what many believe, a weave is not a “set it and forget it” process. You should do your best to keep your natural hair as well as the weave in optimal condition.

Use these tips to keep your natural hair and weaves in shape.

#1: Shampoo and condition

You need to shampoo your hair on a regular basis. Concentrate the shampoo on your scalp and work it in with the balls of your fingertips. Then work the shampoo down the weave hair, but do not ball it up on the top of your head. Instead, work your fingers straight down through the hair to the ends. Allow the water to work the shampoo down. It is important to keep the weave hair as straight as possible to prevent matting and tangling. Follow up with deep conditioning.

#2: Detangle your weave and secure it at night

Detangle your weave before and after washing with a wide tooth comb from ends to the roots, just as you would your natural hair. The weave should be secured at night, either under a satin cap or scarf.

#3: Oil your scalp

Your hair and scalp still need nourishment. Work natural oils beneath the weave onto your scalp and massage them in. If the weave is made of human hair getting a little product on it won’t hurt it, but synthetic hair doesn’t require additional products, so you’ll have to be careful not to get oils on it.

#4: Let your hair breathe. Take out your weave

Remove your weave after six to eight weeks. You start to compromise the health of your natural hair if you leave your weave in for too long. If you extend this time too much, not only will your weave begin to look old and ragged, your new growth may begin to mat and loc.

After the weave is removed:

Gently detangle your natural hair before washing it. Spray water mixed with a conditioner or a bit of water and oil and detangle with your fingers before going back with a wide tooth comb. And remember to always detangle from the ends up to eliminate knots and tangles.

Let your hair rest. Weaves, braids, and extensions place stress on your hair no matter how much care is taken. We suggest waiting at least two weeks before installing another weave.
